Visa requirements for South Africans

Visa-exempt short visit: South African short-visit visa exemption; Zanzibar insurance is separate. Short tourist visits, with permitted duration authorised by immigration on arrival

South African Republic is on Tanzania’s official visa-free nationality list, so an ordinary qualifying tourist visit does not require an eVisa application. Zanzibar has a separate inbound-insurance scheme: use the official ZIC portal, obtain the applicable policy and retain its certificate/QR code. The October 2026 mainland SADC insurance exemption must not be interpreted as an automatic Zanzibar exemption.

Fee: No tourist visa fee for an eligible South African passport. Separate mandatory Zanzibar insurance charges apply; check the official ZIC quote.

Passport / identification: Plan for at least six months validity and an unused visa/entry page; recheck the official entry rules.

Carry return/onward travel, accommodation and insurance documents. Check yellow-fever requirements for any connecting countries. Immigration determines your authorised stay.
