Visa requirements for South Africans
Visa required: Schengen short-stay tourist visa (type C). Up to 90 days in any 180-day period, subject to the visa’s dates and entry conditions
Use the official Portugal application information to identify the correct South African appointment channel. Apply to the country where you will spend the most time; if stays are equal, use the first Schengen country visited. Complete the form, book an appointment and provide passport, photograph, itinerary, accommodation, funds and travel medical insurance, with biometrics where required. Applications can normally be lodged up to six months ahead and should be submitted at least 15 days before travel. Processing can extend to 45 days, and appointment waits are additional. Do not treat a pending application as permission to travel.
Fee: Standard visa fee: €90 for adults; €45 for children aged 6 to under 12. Exemptions and appointment-centre service fees may apply.
Passport / identification: Generally valid for at least three months after leaving Schengen and issued within the previous ten years; confirm blank-page and consulate requirements.
Carry accommodation, funds, return/onward travel and insurance documents. Each family member needs the appropriate application and travel document; consult the consulate’s child-consent checklist.

Family travel
Choose a base that limits steep daily climbs, and break walking routes into short outings with tram or taxi alternatives.
Before you go
- Lisbon’s steep streets and uneven pavements need planning for prams or reduced mobility.
- Book popular monument visits through official channels and check closures before travelling across the city.
- If combining Schengen countries, apply to the country where you will spend the most nights, not automatically your first airport.
